Gloria Avila

Fellow's photoGloria Avila, Gloria Avila was 20 years old when she was selected as a GOJoven Fellow.  Gloria has been an active leader in sexual and reproductive health since junior college.  While working toward her Associate’s Degree in International Business at Sacred Heart Junior College, Gloria became a volunteer with Youth For the Future (YFF), in Cayo District, Belize, where she assisted in planning trainings and workshops for youth in the areas of HIV/AIDS, gender equity, and conflict resolution.  In 2007 she joined the Emergency Contraception Leadership Initiative, and since then she has received additional trainings in computer skills, psychology, and negotiations.  The following year she became a part- time teacher at Sadie Vernon High School and later became the Coordinator for Belizeans Emergency Contraceptive Advocates (BECA).  In her role as the BECA Coordinator, Gloria and her team worked towards building the capacity of key service providers in the area of reproductive health and emergency contraception, in order to reduce unwanted pregnancy, abortion, and maternal mortality in the Cayo District. She is presently working as the Administrative Assistant/Account’s Clerk for GOJoven Belize in Belmopan City. Gloria is very passionate and committed to the work she does.
